Definox Makes Biodiversity a Hands-On Project

Protecting biodiversity is now a major challenge in the environmental transition. At Definox, this commitment takes the form of concrete actions carried out both on our site and within our local area. In partnership with La Solid’ Association and La Miellerie des Trois Vallées, we are gradually implementing several initiatives designed to support local wildlife and plant life while raising employee awareness of these important issues.

A New Step in Our CSR Commitment

This initiative is part of Definox’s ongoing environmental efforts. Since 2022, the company has been working to reduce its carbon footprint through a decarbonization program that has identified key areas for action, particularly regarding raw materials, transportation, and mobility.

Alongside these efforts, we wanted to develop projects that are more closely connected to our local community and that actively involve our employees. Biodiversity quickly emerged as a unifying and meaningful topic.

“We wanted to implement concrete actions for our employees that are rooted in our local area. Biodiversity seemed like an accessible way to address environmental challenges by focusing on what is happening right around us,” explains Marie Jourdain, QSE-CSR Manager.

A Project Built on Existing Biodiversity

Before any action was taken, La Solid’ Association conducted an ecological assessment of the site to identify the species already present and ensure that future developments would be adapted to local needs.

The survey recorded nearly 22 bird species, as well as bats and hedgehogs, highlighting the site’s already significant ecological potential.

“You can’t install birdhouses or plant hedgerows without first understanding which species are already living there,” says Fanny, Environmental Education Officer at La Solid’.

Creating Habitats to Encourage Biodiversity

Based on the ecological assessment, several biodiversity-friendly installations will gradually be introduced across the Definox site.

These initiatives include the installation of shelters for birds, bats and hedgehogs, as well as the creation of a planted hedgerow, a deadwood hedge and a wildflower meadow.

Beyond their ecological value, these installations will also serve an educational purpose. Informational materials will help employees better understand the species living on the site and the role each feature plays in supporting biodiversity.

Bees as Ambassadors for Biodiversity

In addition to these initiatives, Definox sponsors two beehives through a partnership with La Miellerie des Trois Vallées.

This collaboration helps raise awareness among employees about the essential role of pollinators and the importance of preserving ecosystems. The hives were intentionally installed in an environment more favorable to bees than the industrial site itself, ensuring optimal conditions for their development.

As Vivien, beekeeper at La Miellerie des Trois Vallées, explains: “Bees are an excellent way to talk about biodiversity.”

A Project Designed to Grow

The biodiversity project will continue throughout the year with the implementation of the various planned installations and additional awareness-raising activities.

By transforming its site into a more welcoming space for biodiversity, Definox is strengthening its commitment to a more responsible industry while fostering closer connections between its employees, the local community, and the natural world.
